5.0 out of 5 stars Multitasking beast
What I like to do is run CPU intensive things in the background while also playing games. Often times I can go in Ryzen Master and drop the clock and voltage down and things still run at a satisfying degree. I’ve used this playing at 1080p-2160p. Top to bottom no issues. Like 2 months later the 7950x3D was on sale for what I bought this for but it is what it is. AM4 lasted a long time. Someday I’ll be buying some x3D 16 core from the last AM5 gen CPUs.

It’s great when you have software that lets you choose to encode/simulate on the CPU and set how many cores to use. Give 8c/16th and play games without issue. I’ve kept up with bios updates so I haven’t had issues with the overvolting EXPO stuff that was in the news. I use a Thermaltake Peerless Assassin to cool it and that’s been adequate even when playing at stock voltages where it hits those 95 celcius temps. You can undervolt this thing, drop the clocks a bit and the performance difference is negligible.

If you’re a software developer, you’ll enjoy the amount of cores for running VMs, docker containers, compiling software, etc. I like photography so enjoy playing with RAW photos in Darktable and mild things in Krita. Going from a 4770k to this was a pretty massive change.

I feel like people buying CPUs seperate probably know what to expect. I was able to run a 4770k for 8 years. I don’t want to run this for 8 years but I wouldn’t be surprised if the performance in games at 2160p is so minor that I just keep going on with this and occasionally upgrading the graphics card

5.0 out of 5 stars It is fast – using it for an Ubuntu Server
I am running my homegrown Rust-developed programs on this. It is incredibly fast.
    I combined it with:
    CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 RAM 64GB (2x32GB) 6600MHz CL32
    GIGABYTE X670 AORUS Elite AX

It is not cheap, but the latest tech rarely is.
No issues – it is just fast.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CPU is amazing, in so many ways!
I can run every core at 5500mhz, for hours, with just a little overclocking, core tuning, and a good 360mm AIO. This is just an amazing amount of computational power for a home computer. The best part, I have it tuned such that I can do this while it runs at 65c (vs 95c). This is an enthusiast CPU, and you will want to watch a lot of videos on how to tune and optimize it, and if you don’t have excellent cooling, you will never get the performance you paid dearly for. This thing rocks, and handles any task I throw at it with zero hesitation. AM5 is also relatively future-proof for a while. 🙂

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, stable, and fast
Easy to install. No more pins that can bend. Stable, solid, and fast running on Linux Mint and previously Windows 11.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance but no sleep option (fixed April 2023)
This cpu has excellent performance and is substantially better then the 5950x I was using before. However there is one small gripe that has bothered me and so far no solution is available. If you use XMP or EXPO ram when you enable it the sleep option is disabled in the firmware. If you run at stock with no XMP or EXPO profile it will still work but defeats the purpose of buying better quality ram. I have tried two motherboards and update to the latest bios on both as well as switching between 1 2 and 4 sticks of ram and putting timings clock and voltage manually. If you buy this cpu and want to oc your ram your going to have to shut down or hibernate your pc every time you turn off your computer. I will update my review if a solution is presented but this is a serious issue that needs to be resolved. Especially if EXPO is amd certified but disables sleep option. Edit march 2023: sleep option now successfully works after recent bios update however it causes weird behavior with the fans but that is likely just something with the motherboard.
Edit April the 2023: after bios update everything works as it supposed to

5.0 out of 5 stars Works fine
Running on a X670E Taichi MOBO. Using an AIO cooler it is currently running at 39 degrees C. Runs my applications without any issues. I am not a gamer, so can not provide any info on gaming performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Performance is below 13900k
What can I tell you, it’s a good cpu for productivity, but it doesn’t win against Intel in neither productivity, nor gaming.

I am not here to bash AMD Ryzen 9, I think they are making strides of innovation. BUT…it will take substantial amount of time before they hone the technology.

I had massive stutters in games with this 7950x cpu, and RTX 4080, then I put my GPU back into 13900k system and had next to none.

I could not update to the latest bios on my motherboard, so it was not running the most current AGESA, but don’t expect this 7950X to beat 13900k, it just 20% slower in gaming.
Win 11 is way more sluggish, but if you upgrading from Ryzen 5000 series, I am sure you will feel a great uplift.

I am waiting till AMD releases new gen CPUs, with no x3D business, because currently x3D cache cpus are broken in many ways. Stutter galore. So, I ended up with 7950x with 16 real cores. But still got the stutters with latest chipset drivers. Fresh Win 11 install too.

Here is what I know: AMD is not bad, but it’s not fully cooked product, it’s not raw either. It’s not fully there yet.

I would gladly shift to AMD if it was better than Intel.
7950X will win against 13900k in select rendering applications, this is where it will shine.

7950X is hotter than my 13900k, yes…about 10-15 degrees hotter in same tasks, and runs pretty darn hot while using Win 11 normally.
The reason is simple, 2 little chips inside get heated way more than 3rd big chip inside. That just how it goes.

Not hating on this cpu, but giving it 3 stars, because it is lagging behind 13900k that came out in 2022.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does not support 4 DDR5 DIMMS at EXPO OC speed
The CPU and AM5 architecture only supports 2 DIMMs on a single memory channel at overclock speed as advertised. I spent 2 weeks trying to figure this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars CPU with NVME gen 5 and DDR5-Expo goodness
    Build:
    AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
    MSI MPG X67E Carbon
    G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5NR
    (AMD Expo 2 x 32GB DDR5 6000 CL30-40-40-96)
    Crucial T700 1TB Gen5 NVMe M.2 (CT1000T700SSD3)

The DDR5 runs solid at 6000MHZ.
    The gen 5 Crucial T700 gets 11700MB/sec.

    FAST!!!

The only caution is that this CPU is tuned to run up to 95 degrees C to get all this performance.
Be sure to have a good cooler.
